Besides the obvious sunscreen and a swimsuit that fits well, there are a few key things you can bring and do before a surf lesson to come prepared.

Surfing is an exhilarating sport that’s captured the hearts of millions of people around the globe. In fact, the global surfing tourism market is estimated to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6% from $9.5 billion dollars in 2022 to $17.1 billion US dollars by 2032, according to Gitnux

The feeling of riding a wave is like no other, so it's no surprise that so many beginners are eager to get started. But before you grab your board and hit the waves, it's important to make sure you have everything you need for a successful first surf lesson. That's why we've created the ultimate checklist to help you prepare for your first time in the water.

We'll cover everything in this blog—from what to wear to what to bring—to help you feel at ease and confident as you paddle out and catch your first wave. So grab your sunscreen, wax your board, and let's get started.

What to Wear

You won't need to worry about wearing a wetsuit when surfing in Costa Rica because the country's warm waters and tropical climate make for ideal conditions all year long. However, there are still a few key clothing items you'll want to bring to ensure you're comfortable and protected while in the water.

  • Boardshorts/Sports Clothes/Swimsuit: You should wear something that allows for easy movement and won't make you feel heavy in the water, such as board shorts, sports clothes, or a swimsuit. Choose swimwear or boardshorts that are well-fitting and won't ride up or down when you're catching waves. To prevent any wardrobe mishaps, one should think about wearing swimsuits that are snug so you can surf without worrying about your swimsuit flying away. For girls, sports bras and tight shorts or leggings are great options.
  • Rashguard or T-Shirt: Rashguard or T-Shirt: Despite how wonderful the warm water feels on your skin, it's still important to safeguard yourself from the sun's harmful UV rays and avoid chafing. A lightweight, breathable rash guard or t-shirt will offer sun protection and aid in avoiding irritation from rubbing against the board.
  • If you're planning to surf somewhere with cooler water temperatures like California or Canada, you'll want to invest in a wetsuit that's appropriate for the climate. Wetsuits are usually made of neoprene, a material that provides insulation to keep your body warm in cold water. The thickness of the neoprene varies, but the colder the water, the thicker your wetsuit should be. Trying on your wetsuit before purchasing is important because you need a wetsuit that allows for a full range of movement while surfing.

By following these clothing recommendations, you'll be well-equipped to enjoy your surfing experience in Costa Rica without any wardrobe mishaps.

What to Bring

There are a few essentials you should pack before your first surf lesson to ensure you’re well equipped for a day of adventure.

  • Surfboard: Whether you're bringing your own or renting one from a nearby surf shop, make sure it's suitable for both your skill level and the surf conditions you'll be surfing in. You can choose the best board for your needs with assistance from your surf instructor. At Planet Surf, instructors typically provide surf boards for their students and will reach out beforehand to ensure you have the right one for your level.
  • Leash: When surfing, it's crucial to always wear a leash because it keeps the board secured to your ankle and guards against it wandering off or hurting other people in the water.
  • Wax: Using wax to coat the top of your board to help you maintain stability and prevent slipping while standing up and paddling.
  • Sunscreen: Use water-resistant sunscreen with a high SPF to shield your skin from the sun's damaging rays. To make sure you're fully protected, reapply sunscreen frequently throughout the day.
  • Water bottle and snacks: Because surfing is a physically demanding sport, it's crucial to fuel up throughout the day. Bring some healthy snacks and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.
  • Towel and change of clothes: After your lesson, you'll want to dry off and change into some comfortable clothes. Bring a towel and a change of clothes so you can relax and enjoy the rest of your day.

By packing these essentials, you'll be well-prepared for a fun day surfing in the sun.

Before Catching Some Waves

Before you hit the water for your first surf lesson, follow these steps to prepare yourself both physically and mentally.

  1. Stay hydrated and eat a healthy meal: Surfing is a physically demanding activity, so be sure to drink plenty of water and eat a healthy meal beforehand in order to nourish your body and make the most out of your session.
  2. Stretch: To avoid injury, spend a few minutes stretching your muscles before entering the water. In order to ensure that you are ready for the physical demands of surfing, concentrate on stretching your upper body, lower back, hips, and legs.
  3. Familiarize yourself with the surf spot: Before you jump in the water, spend some time getting to know the surf spot and its surroundings. Keep an eye out for dangers like rocks or strong currents, and observe where other surfers are getting in and out of the water.
  4. Listen carefully to your instructor: Your surf instructor is there to guide you and ensure your safety in the water. To get the most out of your lesson and stay safe, pay close attention to their advice and follow it.

Surfing Equipment Checklist

Preparing for your first surf lesson is essential for a successful and enjoyable experience—if you follow the above checklist, you’ll be good to go. By knowing what to wear, what to bring, and how to prepare both physically and mentally, you'll be well-equipped to hit the water with confidence and excitement.
