Hola I’m Jose, a coach who has been surfing since I was 14. When I graduated high school, I left my town to study english and then I came back and started doing part time lessons and worked in a hotel. Eventually, I realized I could make my passion into a living and be outdoors in the ocean and was so thankful to become a surf coach and have flexibility and be in nature. Surfing is completely related to life, you have to make an effort and sacrifice to get a wave. It’s exactly how life works—first you have to work hard and might struggle in the impact zone but once you go through the hard part, you then get the reward of getting the wave. And that’s the best feeling ever. One of the most important values of a surf coach is patience because you need to communicate effectively to each person who is different. I like to encourage people so they want to surf even though it can be difficult and challenging. Surfing is about paying attention to little details to progress, adding new techniques little by little until the cup gets completely full and the students progress more and more. It’s physically challenging but also mentally—a lot of people block themselves mentally, so I’m here to encourage you through that. There’s a different approach for each student so it’s important for me to read their approach and adapt accordingly. With the right attitude, anyone can surf! I’m a local to the area so I know all the breaks very well!
